Education City Stadium is a football stadium which is located in Al Rayyan, Qatar, and was built as a venue in time for the upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup held in Qatar. The stadium is located within several university campuses at the Qatar Foundation's Education City. Following the FIFA World Cup, the stadium will retain 25,000 seats for use by university athletic teams. On 3 September 2020, the stadium hosted its first official match, played in the 2020–21 Qatar Stars League season.
It is located just a few kilometers away from Khalifa International Stadium. They are the two closest stadiums in distance by car among the eight stadiums but run on different Metro Lines: Khalifa Stadium | SPORTS CITY – Gold Line, Education City Stadium | EDUCATION CITY – Green Line.
Education City Stadium has a design that draws on the rich history of Islamic architecture, blending it with striking modernity. It has been given the nickname “Diamond in the Desert”. The façade features triangles that form complex, diamond-esque geometrical patterns, appearing to change colour with the sun’s movement across the sky. By night, the façade puts on a colourful light show, making it even more eye-catching.
Like diamonds, the stadium’s design represents quality, durability and resilience, and will become something to be treasured – both for the memories it holds and its future value to the country and region.
