The parent organization is a "private foundation for public benefit" as per Qatari laws. While it receives funding from the Qatari government, it retains its editorial independence. However, during the Qatar diplomatic crisis in June 2017, the Saudi, Emirati, Bahraini, and Egyptian governments demanded the closure of the entire media conglomerate as one of thirteen conditions presented to the Government of Qatar. It has also been accused by some organizations and countries, including Saudi Arabia, of being "Qatari propaganda".
Al Jazeera Satellite Channel, now referred to as AJA, was established on 1 November 1996 after the British Broadcasting Corporation's (BBC) Arabic language television station was shut down. The BBC channel ceased operations following a year and a half after the Saudi government attempted to censor its content, which included a graphic report on executions and dissident views.
